Jan Cummings

Jan Cummings was at her high school reunion when she got the phone call from her doctor. "She told me to get a follow-up diagnostic mammogram because of the results of my annual screening mammogram," says Jan.

When Jan learned she had breast cancer, she was in shock. "I didn't believe that I was even a candidate for breast cancer. I was 56. I ate right, exercised and had no direct family history of the disease," she says. "Later, I realized that all women (and some men) are candidates for breast cancer."

Following her successful treatment at Memorial Cancer Institute, Jan knew she wanted to support the staff and doctors at the new Memorial Breast Cancer Center. Open in March 2005, the Center is now one of only a few freestanding facilities in the nation dedicated exclusively to breast cancer. Jan and her husband, Jim, became the first major contributors to this effort.

Thanks to the generosity of Jan and Jim and others, Memorial Breast Cancer Center offers an individualized, multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer patients and women at high risk for the disease. The Center combines medical expertise, advanced treatment options and essential support services.

Working with Memorial Foundation, the Jan and Jim dedicated Memorial Breast Cancer Center's conference room in honor of Drs. Phyllis Neimark and Jonathan R. Weiser - Jan's physicians - and another room in honor of the doctors' surgical assistants, Kathy Pantuso, RNFA, and Ann Simler, RN.

Jan Cummings has turned her personal story about breast cancer into a campaign to help others. Your support of Memorial Foundation can go far to help others in our community, as well. To learn how you can make a difference, please contact us today.
